Traditional Textiles of India

Image

The tradition of handwoven textiles constitutes one of the richest and most resilient aspects of Indian cultural heritage. If Kashmir and Varanasi are known for their exquisite weaving, Rajasthan and Gujarat are known for the dyeing and printing techniques that are just sublime. The rich gold brocades and saris of Varanasi, the silks of Mysore, Kanchipuram, Murshidabad as well as the cotton saris of West Bengal, famous Chanderi sarees and Maheshwari sarees of Madhya Pradesh.

India's tie and dye (the Ikat technique) cloth makers have attracted the attention not only of the masses of the country but also enthralled the world. The tie and dye fabrics of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh are well known. Manipur, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura produce textiles in bright colors and geometric motifs symbolizing figures of animals and human beings, flowers and birds.

There are so many innumerable varieties available in every part of India and such rich traditions need to be portrayed to customers.
